Project Description

Beep-c-en is a project funded by the European Commission within the Call FP 7-SME-2008-01.
The project deals with the integration of innovative biosensor research and technology and their exploitation by industry and/or other socio-economic entities in the fields of environment and agro-industry. The aim is building up a biosensor modular industrial platform, which can be easily adopted for the detection of pesticides, heavy metal and organic compounds in water. The team is composed of 3 research institutes and 5 companies (3 SMEs and 2 end-users), with a total of 6 involved EU Member States (Italy, Spain, Uinited Kingdom, France, Germany, The Netherlands).

Strategic Objectives

- Realize a biosensor design and production framework easily adopted for multi-parameter monitoring using electrochemical and optical biosensors
- Develop a low cost, user friendly, general platform, with low or no organic solvents and consumables, useful for the monitoring of industrial and urban effluents, sewage sludge, landfill leak-water, ground water, irrigation and drinking water, recycled water, etc.
- Provide the required measurement by an easy, automatic, cheap method, with no needs of maintenance
- Explore a device able to perform a reliable measurement on the real quality of the groundwater in the distribution network.

The project will lead to a tremendous breakthrough in the detection of contaminants in the environment, water and food. The wide applicability of the developed sensors will be restricted within the field of interest and operation of the end-users, which concerns environmental monitoring, industrial process control and security.

Potential Impact

Biosensor technology has great potential as a revolutionary method for the analysis and control of biological systems. The wide range of applications is realized by the fact that these systems are needed in the agricultural sector, veterinary analysis, industry for drinkable products, in fermentation industry, waste water management, environmental pollution monitoring, and microbial contamination, clinical diagnosis, drug monitoring and analysis, in mining, in military and defensive applications; aerospace personnel safety and many others.
The project will give the SMEs the license and commercialization right of the patents coming from the research results and the possibility of strictly collaborating with the subcontracted institutions to define the properties of a real marketable product.
Regarding biosensor production, its marketing is only in part in competition with other chemical analytical systems, as well as conventional laboratory techniques, since biosensors are intended for on-line in-situ monitoring and for a pre-screening activity of the samples to be analyzed, addressing further laboratories analyses.
The project will improve the SMEs competitiveness by the contribution it will give to the pollution control and addressing a market that is expected to steadily grow in the future.
